Tazawa, Rookie of the Year? 田沢、新人王か？

Jun-ichi Tazawa, who pitched for the Shin-Nihon Oil Company ENEOS team, left for the U.S. reportedly to sign with the Boston Red Sox. He hasn't employed an agent, unlike ohter professional ball players. And as many of you know, he is the first ball player to go directly to the Major League Baseball from Japan's industrial amateur baseball clubs.

He reminds me of Hideo Nomo, who was actually the second Japanese ball player to play in the Major League. (Masanori Murakami, who pitched for the San Francisco Giants is the first Japanese player.) Nomo made a sensational debut in the Major League in May, 1995. His "Tornado" pitching attracted many fans including children, many of whom used to say "I want to pitch like Nomo." He literally paved the way for Japanese ball players to play in the Major League.

Hideo Nomo, who regrettably decided not to play baseball this year, is the icon for many Japanese ball players and fans alike.
I am one of them. His pioneer spirit is inspirational for me. He gave me courage. He gave me a push when I was down. This is where I think sports play major roles in our daily lives.
Nomo, we will no more be hearing your name on the pitching mound, but we will surely see you around the ball park not in the distant future. See you.

新日本石油エネオスの田沢純一投手が、ボストン・レッド・ソックスとの契約のために、アメリカへ向けて出発しました。プロの野球選手とは異なり、彼は代理人を雇いませんでした。皆さんご存知の通り、彼は社会人野球から直接大リーグに行く最初の選手です。

彼を見ると、野茂英雄のことを思い出します。実は、野茂はメジャーリーグに参加した最初の選手ではなかったのです。（最初の選手は、村上雅則投手で、１９６４から６５年にサンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツで投げました）１９９５年５月、野茂投手は劇的デビューを飾りました。彼の「トルネード」投法は、数多くのファンを魅了しました。ファンの多くの子供達は、よく「ぼくもノモみたいな投手になりたい」と言ったものでした。彼は文字通り、その後の日本選手に道を開きました。

残念ながら、野茂英雄は今年引退を決めましたが、彼は多くの選手やファンにとってもあこがれの選手です。私にとっても彼はあこがれの選手です。彼の開拓者魂は、私の心を揺さぶり、元気を与えてくれました。勇気をくれました。落ち込んだいた時、背中を後押ししてくれました。こうゆう所でスポーツは、私達の日常生活で大きな役割を果たしていると思います。野茂さん、もうピッチャーズマウンドであなたの名前を聞くことはないでしょうが、近い将来球場でお目にかかると思います。また会いましょう。
